Looking forward to spending the holiday in San Diego with friends, they mentioned getting ready for a trip wasn't as easy as it once was. They both made lists to remember what to bring and then lists to remember the lists.

Our Concierge Services Department brought them some traveling money two days prior to the trip. On a chilly Spokane morning at 5 a.m., I picked them up for the airport with coffee and Danish in hand (and passenger seats in RiverBank's Lexus well warmed). Good spirits and anticipation filled our conversation.

My phone rang at 8 o'clock that same evening. Could I pick them up at the airport, she asked. Her husband was not doing well, and they would arrive at midnight. I asked, did they needed medical assistance? No, just a way to get home, please.

Meeting their plane, I understood why there was no place they would rather be than home -- not among strangers or at an emergency room hundreds of miles away. Just home. So that's where I took them, checked the house to make sure the heat and phone were in working order, and made a quiet exit.

No bells (despite the holidays). No whistles. Just genuine caring for the people we serve. What story could be better?
